Innovators/7 Barrow County Aftermath

Your recent foray into the world of contagious and communicable diseases has ended.  Your team presented your findings and improvements and suggestions were acknowledged.  It is now time for each of you to debrief on what you have learned through this simulation, which we know from recent Ecoli outbreaks that this type of event happens all too often.  In your debriefing, please explain the following;

  • What is a contagious disease?
  •  How can is spread throughout a population?
  • What was the most challenging aspect of this simulation?
  • What did you find most surprising during your experience as a Barrow County Health Official.
Make sure that your statements are supported by facts, experiences and knowledge gained through your time engaged in this unit of study.

  1. A contagious disease is defined as "an infectious disease communicable by contact with one who has it, with a bodily discharge of such a patient, or with an object touched by such a patient or by bodily discharges" by the Webster Dictionary. It is basically a disease (in the Barrow County case, E. coli) that is spread through one person or object to another. A contagious disease can spread through population through touch (by person to person or through touching a surface or material), airborne, or food borne. For example, in the Barrow County E. coli case, the bacteria was spread by either food borne or by touch. It could have spread through the well water which was located dangerously close to the stream, or simply could have been the result of someone NOT washing their hands and touching things that people soon after touched.

The most challenging part of this case, in my opinion was analyzing data to figure out who had what, and how they got it. This experience, although challenging, also felt rewarding once you came to a final conclusion as to what happened. Using the similarities between Anthony Greene and Susie Thompson to determine that they both had HUS was very rewarding once you analyzed data. One thing I found very surprising as a Barrow County Health Official was the lack of care that went into preventing illness at the fair. Not one place on the map hinted or even mentioned a hand cleansing area. To think an outbreak was just caused by people either not washing their hands enough or not taking the extra step to make sure food or water was clean and safe is just awful and careless.

    1. A contagious disease is a infection transmitted that you get without washing your hands before you cooked or when you sneeze or cough. When we had to read about the different cases and how we had to support our reasons for their deaths. I thought that Susie Thompson was going to live but she died.

  2. A contagious disease is a disease that can be transmitted (communicated from one host to another). A contagious disease can spread throughout a population by people sharing items, such as controllers for a video game, pencils, and other things. It can also be transmitted by coming in contact with someone who doesn't wash their hands, ingesting contaminated food/water, or it can spread by air.

I think the most challenging aspect of the Barrow County Project was gathering all of the information and piecing it all together. I think what I found most interesting as a Barrow County Official was how Susie Thompson died. E. coli to me always just meant vomit and diarrhea, no after disease or side effects. After making connections between information, it made a lot more sense on how she died, and how Anthony Green got a kidney disease after having E. coli. I learned a lot from this project.

  4. A contagious disease is a infection sickness disease or bacterium that can spread or transmit to anything humans and even animals. A disease can be spreaded through out a population such as drinking or eating off of people. It can also, spread by people who are not hands sanitizing their hands or washing their hands. It could spread my breathing In people airs or even the air.

The most challenging about of the stimulation would have to be typing it up and summarizing all the names and data they had. The theories was easy for me and my partner to figure out. What I had found surprising was Susie Thompson dying. I found this surprising because although I knew people would have died I just didn't think that it would be Susie out of all the file and interviews we did because Susie was one of the patients that didn't have harsh symptoms until later then.

  5. A contagious disease is any disease that is spread through human and animals. Contagious diseases are spread though someone sick coming in direct contact with someone who is healthy. Once they come in contact with each other the disease can be spread. One of the ways they can come in contact is by coughing or sneezing in a healthy persons face, a diseased person not washing their hands then touching a healthy person, and others.
The most challenging part of this simulation was trying to prevent the disease from occouing again. This was most difficult part for me because we had to figure out how the disease was spreading, and what the disease was, also if we got the disease wrong then this affected the whole process of preventing the spreading because we had to find out what the new disease was and how it was spread and how to prevent it all over again.
I think the most surprising thing was we found out that people had died. This was very surprising to me because even though it was a simulation, it was amazing to know that these people had died because of us, and we could have prevented it.

  6. A contagious disease is a disease that can spread from one person to another. like direct contact with another person sneezing or coughing and not washing your hands is a way it can spread. The most challenging part of this simulation for me was figuring out what may have caused the spread of the disease because you needed to figure out who went where and how the may have of contacted the disease. I think the most surprising thing that happened was Susie Thompson's death because when she recovered from the hospital we gave her the green card and sent her home. But when she came back she had a rash and was very dehydrated and later past away because we had no clue what was wrong with her.

  7. A contagious disease is a disease that can spread from person to person. Just like someone coughs and sneezes on something and someone touches that object and then touches their eyes and that person does the same as the first. It can spread through a population by many ways such as someone coughing and then touches something and another person catches it. Also from farmers if they feed their animals something that has bacteria like a cow. If the farmer feeds it something with E.coli people that eat hamburgers or drink milk that person will have E.coli. The most challenging aspect was getting info about how Susie Thompson died. It was hard because my team had to go through the documents to figure out what caused her death and that was HUS. What i found most surprising was how long it took to find the cause of E.coli because I had to reread the text to find all the important info to find out the mystery disease. Another thing I found surprising was the cooperation part we did very well together we found everything that we needed.

  8. A contagious disease is an illness that someone gets from food, not washing their hands, or petting an animal. These types if diseases spread from person to person also those are ways you can get E.Coli.
The disease can spread without you knowing it. So if one person uses the bathroom or pets an animal without washing their hands then hugs a person or touches them than they can get infected so when they go and touch someone else than that person will get infected as well.
The most challenging aspect was trying to find out who was infected by what food and who did the same thing as someone who was infected. so there was a lot of flipping through papers.
What I found the most surprising during my experience was how much we got into the work like we were actually the doctors and inspectors.

A contagious disease is some kind of infection that spread from one person to another. A contagious disease can spread when someone does not wash their hands after using the bathroom or just touches objects that could have germs on it and then comes in contact with another person getting them sick.

In my opinion the most challenging part of the simulation was finding out if each person had the same sickness because you had to look at every detail and symptoms. Something that i found surprising during this experience was how much me and my partner improved the fair from before, and how it would actually help.

  10. A contagious disease is a subset category of transmissible diseases (can transmit from person to another), usually infections or some non-infection diseases, which are transmitted to other people. It can spread either by physical contact with the person suffering the disease, by casual contact with their objects touched by them, foodborne or airborne routes (ex. Barrow County had E-coli). Simple things such as not washing your hands often or not covering your cough/sneeze can transmit the disease. You can help protect yourself against contagious diseases by washing your hands well and often, staying away from those who are sick and making sure you're up to date on all vaccinations.

The most challenging aspect of this stimulation, in my opinion was figuring out the cause of the spread. Also setting up the data to see who is ill and why. After digging deep into this situation my partner and I began to see some connections between the patients, what activities they had participated in and their symptoms. A surprising factor in all of this is that Susie Thompson had died of HUS instead of E-coli, although the symptoms were fairly similar. This project was frustrating however, a learning experience for all of us.

  11. What is a contagious disease?
A contagious disease is a disease that can be transmitted through touching someone with the disease, through the air, or by touching something that the person touched.

How can is spread throughout a population?
A contagious disease, as I said before, can spread through the population by air, physically touching someone with the disease, or by touching something that the person touched.

What was the most challenging aspect of this simulation?
The most challenging aspect of the Barrow County simulation was when we had to find where the source of the e. coli outbreak was. This was because there were so many ways the e. coli could have spread, it was hard to pinpoint a certain place it started.

What did you find most surprising during your experience as a Barrow County Health Official?
The thing I found most surprising is that the e. coli outbreak spread so easily. This was surprising because if an outbreak could spread so easily, the Barrow County health officials were very lax in checking for e. coli and other bacteria or diseases.

  12. t was the most challenging part????? Well for my group it was not catching on to someone who had died we didn't know about and how many packets and papers we had to deal with to find out why the E.Coli outbreak was Happening. Also IF someone didn't tell the truth that could have changed the whole plan and we have to figure out.

The most supersizing experience that happen during this was probable finding out what happen to these people and how serious this whole thing was!!!!##LOL :)

  14. A contagious disease is disease spread by contact, air or food from one living organism to another. It can spread through a population by as I stated above food (and water), air, and contact. Spreading from an infected person or item to a non infected being.
I think the most challenging aspect of the simulation was acting fast with the information we had. Like on Anthony Green, we had the information but it was challenging and stressful to word it so it made sense and how to correctly save him with a decent procedure.
I think the most interesting part of this was the fact that it really happens all the time. Sometimes there is zn epidemic or it is just a small non contagious disease. But the application to real life in this project showed us how stressful and how dangerous it is to be a doctor or work in the medical field.

The most challenging part of this simulation was to know where the E.coli breakout started because there were so many places that it could have started and it was not just one was there were several ways the outbreak could have had started.

What did you find most surprising as a Barrow county health official.
What i found most surprising was how one person was able to do everything at the fair but did not get sick with E.coli.

  18. What is a contagious disease?
A contagious disease is a disease that is transferable by human to human contact either by contact or air.

How can a disease spread through a population?
A way that disease can spread through a population is that one person gets sick, and that one person gets in contact with multiple different people, now they have the disease, and they come contact with even more people, even more people get the disease. Then the symptoms start coming in and most cases people die.Another way it can spread is by insects especially mosquitoes. These creature come into contact with a whole lot of people, and by the time it gets to you, it might already have been effected from someone else.

What was the most challenging aspect of the simulation?
Well, lets start off with there could've been many possibilities for a different disease. Second off was research we were going into unmarked waters, and it was a entirely new fresh off the boat experience. But I guess you learn better when your in the places that are new to you.

What did you find most surprising about Barrow county health officials?
That they didn't see E.coli coming and should've inspected every gram of food that's served anywhere

  20. a contagious disease is a disease that can pass to different people and animals in different ways. It can spread through a population by coming in contact with other people and animals. The most challenging thing in this project was finding out what the disease was. The most surprising thing that I found was how disease can also be in animals.

  21. A contagious disease is a disease that can spread from person to person or object to person. A contagious disease can spread throughout a population through touch, air, or food. It can spread through touch for example like in barrow county all the people touched the animals , food born is like when the hamburgers were tested E. coli positive and air is when the animal farm spread it to Susie Thompson through the disease traveling through the air. Disease is so easily spread expetially through uncleanslyness like everyone at the fair not washing their hands.

The most challenging part of this stimulation to me was just diagnosing the disease in the first case. There are so many diseases and many that we could have mistaken it for. Luckily we ended up getting it right but i couldn't imagine it in the real world. Now its just a grade, life will go on but in the real world many people could have died. The most surprising part to me during the stimulation was the fact that diagnosing it and treating a disease doesn't mean its over even if the patient is cured. Susie Thompson is a good example with the other disease can also ended up getting. Overall I thought it was a really fun project and I really enjoyed it.

  24. Contagious mean to be spread with hands, food, or basically just person to person contact. It can spread through: food, people contact, animals, and just being coughed on, sneezed on, or you just didn't wash you hands, that could spread something. The most challenging part of everything was trying to find the cure, cause, and trying to find patient zero! I think the most surprising part of this whole project with Barrow County was seeing how many more people were getting sick and people not thinking it could be the food or animals, because they never stated what "caused" this, they just listed the information that was at the fair. The people who were giving us this information pretty much left the work for us. ( Which was the whole project). But, if this was a real life situation, people wouldn't just leave the work to 2 or more people.~~~~~~~Emma Fitzpatrick

  25. A contagious disease is a disease that is obviously very contagious and is transmitted from people to people, air born, or food born.

I think the most challenging part of the simulation was trying to find how fast the disease spread, how many people were in the room, how fast the disease spread, and whether it was person to person, food born, or air born.

What I found surprising about the barrow county assignment was how easy it was at first and then when Susie Thompson died we had to find every little detail and how she dies, how she got it and what happened to her. After Anthony Green died things got a lot more complicated because we didn't have only one person to care for but now we had two.

  27. What is a contagious disease?
A contagious disease is a disease that can spread out many ways person to person, by air or food. Another way would be not washing your hand and than you hug someone or something like that

How can a contagious disease spread by population?
a contagious disease can be spread out from person to person if you had any contact with one. You had talked to them or any hanging out with anyone. Another way a disease could be spread out is by air. You cough and didn't cover your month by accident its in the air and other. people are breathing that air. They would be infected. A last one could be by food. You are ill and make something to eat all the germs you have from your disease would get in your food. So you would have to wash your hands.
What was the most challenging aspect to this simulation?
The most challenging thing was when you had to figure out what disease it was and how/where it started cause their was many disease with the same symptoms and many place the disease could have started.
What was the most interesting thing at barrow county?
The most surprising thing was how fast we had to work to save all the people but at the beginning we were I guess working a bit slow and Susan Thompson cause we didn't find that the kidneys could be damage with E.coli on you

  28. • What is a contagious disease? A disease that can be spread to and by people and animals.
    • How can is spread throughout a population? It can spread by person to person contact, by food, by animals, or by air.
    • What was the most challenging aspect of this simulation? The most challenging part was figuring out the cause of the e.coli, having so much information to look through and hone in on what was important, having to be so specific about our findings.
    • What did you find most surprising during your experience as a Barrow County Health Official? I didn’t realize there were so many health hazards at a fair, that someone can die from e.coli in a fairly short amount of time, and that county health officials have a job to do but also have to keep the public calm and informed at the same time.
